Magnitude 5.9 quake hits eastern Iran

LONDON - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Iran on Wednesday, 42 miles (68 km) north-northeast of Birjand, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

It said the quake, which it initially recorded as magnitude 6.0, was very shallow at a depth of 6.2 miles (68 km) and had hit the area at 1708 GMT.
