OSAKA - Toru Hashimoto, the mayor of the Japanese city of Osaka, expressed Thursday his willingness to become leader of a new political "party" which his regional group is planning to establish this month, local press reported.

Hashimoto, who is also the leader of the Osaka Ishin no Kai regional group (Osaka Restoration Association), made the official announcement during a press conference held on Thursday, stressing that he would hold the post of the new party while continuing to serve as the mayor of Osaka, the report said.

Answering questions about holding two posts concurrently, Hashimoto said it is possible for a head of local autonomy to cover multiple jobs at once depending on the method.

He also expressed his intention to seek the best way leading to discussions about "sense of values" as the leader of a new party ahead of the next general election, the report added.

Hashimoto and the new political party are expected to field as many as 300 candidates in the general election for the 480-seat House of Representatives, which is to be held by August 2013, hoping to win 200 seats.
