STOCKHOLM - Support from Russia was needed in the hope of settling the Syrian issue, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday at a press conference in Stockholm.
Hillary said that she talked to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the past two to three days and expressed "straight forward" that Russia has to be at the table to help achieving a political transition in Syria.
According to Hillary, Lavrov referred to the Yemen example which "took a lot of time and effort with a number of countries who were involved at the table working to achieve a political transition."
"We would like to see the same occur in Syria," added Hillary.
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who was also at the press conference together with Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, claimed that both Sweden and the United States would support the political transition "in line with (UN-Arab League joint envoy) Kofi Annan's plan."
Meanwhile, Hillary expressed the concerns on the troubled economy situation in Europe as the United States "highly value" the relationships with its European partners, while emphasizing that "it is truly up to the Europeans themselves to make the decisions moving forward."
