PhD candidate occupying seat delays plane

Airplane passengers making fools of themselves often made news in recent months. We've heard of someone opening the emergency exit door or opening a life jacket out of curiosity, but never expect a highly-educated PhD candidate to shame himself this way.

A doctoral student from a famous Shanghai-based university, surnamed Deng, occupied a window seat instead of his own seat by insisting that the seating is determined by the phrase, "first come, first take the seat", which led to Flight FM9311 from Shanghai to Guangzhou to be delayed for two hours, eastday.com, citing a microblogger, reported on Friday.

Deng, who was on a business trip, refused to change seats after attendants tried to convince him to do so for more than 20 minutes. He was then taken away by the police and is now in administrative detention.
