XI'AN -- A wild giant panda was recently spotted in a nature reserve in Northwest China's Shaanxi province, local authorities said Tuesday.

Staff at the Huangguanshan Nature Reserve found the panda searching for food on tapes obtained from 30 infrared cameras installed in the reserve, said Liu Gefei, deputy head of the reserve's administration.

"We concluded from the pictures that the panda is a subadult weighing about 60 kg," Liu said.

Last year, reserve staff discovered a wild panda in the area for the first time.

Giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. Fewer than 2,000 pandas live in the wild, mostly in Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces.
