Wintek workers return after striking for hours

Dongguan police have confirmed that production at Wintek, a Taiwan-funded electronics company, resumed after workers went on strike for more than two hours in the Pearl River Delta city of Guangdong province on Tuesday.

The strike began at about 9 am when hundreds of workers stopped work to rally in front of the company in Sangyuan Industrial Zone, Dongcheng district, resulting in a traffic standstill in nearby Shilong and Huancheng roads.

Police and relevant government employees were immediately sent to the scene to help maintain social order and mediate the strike.

The strike started when the company refused to give mooncake coupons to workers for the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Monday this year, and refused to pay workers a festive bonus valued at 600 yuan ($98), police said.

"Workers resumed work after 11 am when they were persuaded by police and relevant government officials," police said in a statement.

No further details were given in the statement.

Wintek began operation in Dongguan in September 1995. The company produces liquid crystal display front boards for US electronic giant Apple.

Covering an area of more than 80,000 square meters, Wintek employs about 20,000 people in Dongguan.
