Beijing police arrested 963 people suspected of drug crimes over the past four months, a 35 percent increase year-on-year, according to a statement issued by the Beijing Public Security Bureau on Monday.

Among those arrested, 58 are accused of involvement in drug trafficking and smuggling, the police said.

The Public Security Bureau selected 396 police officers to develop a campaign against drugs in April and required them to cooperate with forces at the city's airports and railways, the statement said.

In the campaign, the police uncovered 15 cases in which the amount of involved drugs was more than 1 kilogram each, while there were also 58 cases involving at least 100 grams of drugs each, the statement said.

In July, Beijing police arrested a gang involving 11 people who allegedly transported more than 3.9 kilograms of methamphetamine from Hubei province, the statement added.

Police collected more than 400 tips from the public during the campaign and found 3,400 drug addicts, confiscating almost 40 kilograms of drugs, according to the statement.
