No 1 Hospital Affiliated to Guangxi Medical University has boosted its medical standards by sending doctors to study and train abroad.

Under a medical cooperation program launched by the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region government, 44 doctors from the hospital have been sent to study in countries including Germany, Hungary and Austria since 2007.

The doctors are from 20 key departments at the hospital.

During the three-month training, they attend surgery at leading hospitals, observing and communicating with European doctors.

Xie Yubo, deputy director of the Guangxi Medical University hospital who studied at the Heitzing Hospital in Austria in 2010, said she learned much about managing anesthetics.

"What impressed me most at the Heitzing Hospital was the people-oriented service the anesthetists provide," Xie said. "For example, they talk to patients to help them relax while injecting the anesthetic, enabling the patients to fall asleep without feeling too nervous."

Zheng Baoshi, director of the Guangxi Medical University hospital's cardiothoracic surgery department, studied in Germany in 2007.

"The innovation, concentration and precision of the German doctors left a deep impression on me and has influenced me since then," he said. "In addition, I have tried to learn from the harmony that exists between patients and doctors in Germany."

Chen Junqiang, deputy director of the hospital, said the 44 doctors have published 24 theses indexed by Science Citation Index, a world-leading thesis index system, accounting for 6 percent of all SCI theses published by the hospital's doctors.

"Four of the 44 doctors have become tutors of PhD students," Chen said.
