Sixty-five major toy companies have pledged to make and sell high-quality products, as part of China's efforts to improve such products, the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association said on Friday in Beijing.

The pledge, which involves 99 brands of toys, children's safety seats for car use and other juvenile products, is intended to set standards for the entire industry and make more companies improve the quality of their products to provide better and safer toys and juvenile products, said Liang Mei, deputy director of China Toy & Juvenile Products Association.

Song Zheng, CEO of Goodbaby Group, representing the companies, pledged to follow national quality standards strictly, honor quality responsibilities and accept supervision from the society.

A joint guideline issued by six departments including the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Ministry of Public Security in December last year called for stricter accreditation and management of juvenile products.

China has required compulsory certification on the manufacturing of six types of toys since 2007, including electric toys, metal toys and vehicles designed for children.

A total of 7,988 certificates have been issued to 1,763 companies since then, according to the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association.

China is the world's biggest toy manufacturer and exporter, with an industry value of more than 200 billion yuan ($32 billion).
