A top human rights expert called for more publicity on the issue as a book series on human rights was published on Jan 11.

Chang Jian, a member of China Society for Human Rights Studies and professor at Nankai University in Tianjin, called for more efforts to publicize human rights issues.

"Human rights knowledge should be made available at primary and middle school classes. It should also be included in the assessment of civil servants to strengthen their ability to serve the public," he said.

"Previously, we were more focused on introducing China's human rights situation to the world. Now we need to focus more on publicizing human rights to the public," he said.

The book series, covering human right issues like civil and political rights, and the rights of women and children, was written by a panel of experts from the China Society for Human Rights Studies. Three other books that include guidelines for law enforcement officials, prison police and judges also were published.

Li Junru, vice-president of the society, said at a panel discussion on Friday that the book series would be "the most authoritative textbooks for human rights knowledge in China."
