Officials are counting on some 20 million visitors to the six month-long exhibition of products and technologies from around the world. About 145 countries are taking part, with 54 national pavilions.
Exhibit opens at Coca Cola Milan Expo pavilion
The Japan Pavilion built on a tract of land of about 4,170 square meters is one of the largest of its kind among participating countries.
Themed "Land of Hope, Food for Life", the pavilion's design evokes rippling wheat. Inside are exhibits on agricultural history, food culture and the future of the world. The "Field of Hope" consists of 20,000 shining artificial wheat straws.
Expo 2015 opened in Milan on May 1 and runs through October 31, with the theme of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".
