UNSC slams bomb attack in Bulgaria

UNITED NATIONS - UN Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned a fatal bombing attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack aimed at Israeli tourists that occurred in Bulgaria on 18 July," said a statement released here by Security Council President Nestor Osorio, expressing the council's deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of this heinous act and to their families.

A bus carrying Israeli tourists exploded on Wednesday outside the Burgas airport in Bulgaria, which reportedly killed six and injured more than 30 people, some critically.

In the statement, the Security Council reiterated its determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibility under the Charter of the United Nations.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," said the statement.

The 15-nation council also underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism to justice, urging all countries to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard.

"The members of the Security Council reminded States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law," it added.
