Underground abodes evacuated

The sky-high housing prices in Beijing have forced many low-income earners to dig into the ground for a roof over their heads. Recently, it was discovered that underground apartments have been found built on the original location of a fishpond, dfic.cn reported on Saturday.

The underground space, as large as 1,500 square meters was divided into 180 apartments. Fifty-five families lived in the apartments, with each home covering no more than 5 square meters each. Originally a fishpond, a parking lot was built on over the pond. It was later turned into rented homes to lure tenants who can not afford a home above ground.

The tenants living in the area have been evacuated for safety reasons.
