Dismissed political advisors show anti-graft heat

Top political adviser Yu Zhengsheng presents the work report of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee at the opening meeting of the annual session in Beijing on Tuesday. Zou Hong / China Daily

In his work report, Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, mentioned that 14 committee members have been dismissed for corruption, and the CPPCC needs to strengthen supervision in order to fight corruption. This is the first time for over 20 years that anti-graft appeared in the CPPCC National Committee chairman's work report. Comments:

The CPPCC National Committee is not the decision-making body of the State, but an essential platform for discussing issues, in which there are quite a large number of senior officials. By clearly stating "anti-graft" in its chair's work report, the committee has sent a clear signal that the campaign against corruption will go on.

The dismissing of 14 members is unprecedented in the history of CPPCC National Committee. Some used to blame the CPPCC for being a place where corrupt officials can retire safely and hide themselves, this move refutes this charge. After the self-cleaning, we expect the CPPCC to raise more advice to propel social progress, which is its primary role.

Yu's work report received not only applause at the conference, but also nationwide praise. This shows fighting corruption has become a consensus of the whole society; even if some officials oppose the move they dare not publicly express their opposition. It is a precious opportunity for rooting out corruption.

Qianjiang Evening News, March 4

Most of the 14 dismissed CPPCC National Committee members embezzled money when they were in official positions, yet their being hunted has cast some negative light upon the CPPCC. Instead of trying to cover up the scandal, the CPPCC has chosen to be open about the matter and vowed to fight corruption to the end.
