China's is holding nationwide World War II commemorations. In Xi'an, China's capital during the Tang Dynasty, a new stage drama has just premiered and has proved a hit with children and parents alike.

"Huzi the Young Hero" is a seven-scene play produced by the Xi'an Performing Arts Troupe. Remarkably, the production was mounted from scratch in just 22 days, calling on writers and cast members alike to work together day and night.

The plot is based on a 1960s children's storybook, "the Heroic Little Route-Eight Armyman," which was very popular among the young generation at the time. This retelling includes song and dance and local opera influences.
