The "One Belt and One Road" strategy was proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Central and Southeast Asia in 2013 to carry forward the spirit of the ancient Silk Road by connecting China and the world and bringing benefits to people around the globe.

Zang Aimin, executive deputy president of QOSCDA, said the journey will not only promote sailing culture in China but also bring peace and mutual understanding abroad.

"In response to the "One Belt and One Road" initiative, the journey will help Qingdao leave a mark in world sailing history by blazing a new "Silk Road" of the 21st century.

"It will promote the comprehensive strategic partnership and the enduring friendship between China and Russia which can work jointly to safeguard world peace and stability. It will advance the in-depth exchanges and cooperation between Qingdao and Russian cities not only in sailing, but also in other fields including culture, trade, and science and technology," she said.

The attempt is among a series of activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Sergey Nizovtsev, of the Russian Geographical Society, pledged that Russian port cities involved will provide full support to the voyage and Russian crew members will work hard under Guo's command.

The event will also enjoy support from the Russian Embassy in China, the China Institute of Navigation, Water Sports Management Center of China and the Chinese Yachting Association.

"The sail will help promote the awareness of oceanic environment protection and exploit a potential new shipping line, which will benefit business between China and Russia," said Roman Khasiev, press-attaché of the Russian Embassy.

As sailing co-host of Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics, Qingdao has developed a long-term strategy to become a world-famous sailing city boasting excellent infrastructure, industrial foundation and a talent pool featuring local pride Guo and female sailor Song Kun, the first Chinese female to complete a circumnavigation.

"The navigation will further enhance the international reputation of Qingdao as the sailing city of China. We are committed to ensuring the success of this navigation through not only our own hard work but also with the support of all domestic and international organizations involved," said Liu Yu, director of Qingdao Administration Center of Sailing Sport.
