FUZHOU - Twenty-one workers trapped in a collapsed expressway tunnel under construction in east China's Fujian Province confirmed they were safe by shouting through an air vent on Friday.

The trapped workers confirmed the vent, which was built earlier on Friday, was working properly at 3:30 pm by knocking on the 27-meter-long iron tube, according to local work safety authorities.

Rescuers were told that 21 workers were buried after a 30-meter-long section of the expressway tunnel in Longyan City collapsed.

An estimated 5,000 cubic meters of debris was blocking the tunnel, which was being expanded to accommodate the expressway linking Xiamen City in Fujian and Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Rescuers said that they would strive to rescue the workers within 30 hours.
