Zhang Huijun, president of the Beijing Film Academy and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said domestic films could withstand the upcoming wave of Hollywood blockbusters and there was no need to worry about the market.
The recent deal loosening restrictions on foreign films would give Hollywood a bigger piece of the Chinese marketplace, Zhang said.
"But we should notice that the agreement only applies to 3D or large-format films. We don't have too many cinemas that can show films in enhanced formats," he said. "It won't take too much money from us."
More cinemas should be built in China's rural areas as farmers' living conditions improved, Zhang said.
"People living in rural areas can afford to and need to watch films nowadays and they would be a major force contributing to the box office for Chinese films."
