Suggestions for reducing the number of toll roads as soon as possible were proposed to the on-going National People's Congress by many deputies and members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Yangcheng Evening News reported.

Ren Qixing, a member of the CPPCC'S National Committee, made a proposal saying that charging a toll for the use of a highway was a violation of a public facility's function provided by the government. He said the number of kilometers covered by tolls must be reduced. "The 120 km highway linking Guangzhou and Shenzhen in Guangdong province received on average 10.11 million yuan ($1.6 million) a day, making much higher profits than the real estate industry," Ren said.

Huang Xihua, an NPC deputy, suggested that from 2013 all toll roads throughout the country should be made free during the Spring Festival from Dec 26 to Jan 6.
