International education company EF Education First has updated its free online tool that allows English learners to test their skills anytime for free on a smartphone, tablet, notebook or a personal computer.

The company released the EF Standard English Test, or EFSET, last September. Minh Ngan Tran, director of EF’s academic research partnership department, describes EFSET as the first free online test tool available anywhere in the world.

The test has three timed versions — 15-minute, 50-minute and 2-hour — each consisting of. listening and reading sections. Users choose a version based on their own needs and receive test result ranging from beginner to advanced.

The test results can help English students predict their performance on popular English language proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS, as high correlations have been found between the EFSET and those widely used tests, Tran said.

EFSET has been used by hundreds of thousands of users around the world since it was released last year, Tran said. Ten universities in Brazil plan to hold two EFSET tests and Italy will also use the too this month to test its 100,000 middle school students.
