18 perish in restaurant attack

At least 18 people were killed and a dozen others wounded in a "terrorist attack" by suspected extremists on a Turkish restaurant in the Burkina Faso capital, the government said on Monday. Two assailants were also killed by security forces who launched a counterassault following Sunday's attack on the restaurant popular with foreigners, officials said.

Hospital oxygen supply restored

Indian health authorities on Monday delivered oxygen to a public hospital where 63 people have died of encephalitis in recent days, nearly half of them children, as it ran out of medical supplies because of unpaid bills, triggering public outrage. The deaths of the children have again exposed India's underfunded and poorly managed public healthcare despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's vows to revamp the system.

Deputy PM under citizenship cloud

The deputy prime minister on Monday became the latest lawmaker to reveal he might have breached a constitutional prohibition on dual citizens becoming lawmakers, after the New Zealand government declared he was a kiwi. Barnaby Joyce, who leads the conservative Nationals minor coalition party, said he had legal advice that he would be cleared by the court and would not stand down from Cabinet.

3 shot dead at auto racing event

A Wisconsin sheriff said three men were shot and killed during an auto racing event. Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said authorities responded to the Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove around 7 pm on Sunday after receiving reports about shots being fired. Beth said the three men were shot by another man at point-blank range near a food vendor. No suspects have been arrested.

17 locked inside rig at gas station

Police in Texas said 17 people were found locked inside a tractor-trailer parked outside a gas station. Police officer Oscar Trevino said immigrants from several different countries may have been locked inside the 18-wheeler for at least eight hours before being freed by officers on Sunday. The incident came more than three weeks after 10 people died and several others were rescued from a sweltering rig in San Antonio.

Two killed as light aircraft crashes

A light aircraft crashed in a mountainous region of Nara Prefecture in western Japan on Monday, killing its two occupants, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said, quoting local firefighters. The aircraft took off from Yao Airport in Osaka Prefecture at just before noon and was headed to Fukushima Prefecture, a person with knowledge of the plane's flight route said.
