Death toll rises to 50 in landslide

The death toll from a landslide at a huge garbage dump on the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa has risen to 50, officials said on Monday. Hundreds of people live on the 50-year-old Reppi dump, the city's only landfill site, scavenging for food and items they can sell such as recyclable metal.

UNICEF: Last year 'worst' for children

In Syria, last year was the worst yet for the country's rising generation, with at least 652 children killed, the United Nations' child relief agency said on Monday. UNICEF said at least 255 children were killed in or near schools last year and 1.7 million youngsters are out of school.

Indonesia

Briton jailed over police killing

A British man was on Monday jailed for six years over the killing of a policeman who was beaten to death on a beach on the Indonesian resort island of Bali. David Taylor, 34, was found guilty of fatal group assault over the killing of officer Wayan Sudarsa, whose battered body was found in August.

Bra parachute wins flying contest

An actor tethered to a homemade parachute made out of bras on Sunday flew his way to the top of a quirky competition, beating other contestants dressed as a balloon horse and winged reptile. The annual Birdman Rally was held in Melbourne, and involved participants flying homemade gliders in front of thousands of spectators.
