  • On track for high speed

    2011-06-01 10:56

Board any of China's high-speed trains and you'll step into a clean and comfortable cabin worthy of airlines. More important, the trains will whisk you to your destination almost as quickly as propeller-driven aircraft. These trains cover the 1,069-km journey between Guangzhou and Wuhan in about three hours, while the 120-km trip between Beijing and Tianjin is done in half an hour.

  • Passenger turnover trails off the rails

    2011-06-01 10:56

The length of China's railway network soared from 49,900 km in 1980 to 91,000 km by the end of 2010, making it the world's second longest. Its passenger and cargo transport facilities have also ranked among the top. Despite the railway's growth, its role in the nation's economic development is trailing off compared to other transport means.

  • It's not just the speed of the trains

Qi Faren's name is linked with China's first satellite, its first unmanned spaceship and first manned spaceship, leading some to say his biography would be an abridged version of China's space history. Like his given name suggests -- "new things begin to emerge" -- he has created many historic "firsts".

I was born in the year China sent its first satellite into orbit in 1970, but I never expected that I would grow up pursuing aerospace stories.

  • Innovation is the way to achieve something out of this world

China's space program has benefited from the reform and opening-up and has presented one vast scene of exuberance over the past three decades. Major technical innovations and breakthroughs were made during the period. In the early 1980s, the country averaged less than one satellite launch a year. But in 2010 alone, 15 launch vehicles blasted off, sending 20 satellites into orbit - and the number is expected to grow this year. China has also exported communications satellites and provided in-orbit delivery services in the international commercial launch service market.

I had one of my early fashion experiences watching a Chinese movie in a small cinema back in my hometown in Anhui province 27 years ago.

  • Now in vogue

Modern Chinese fashion really took shape only when global products and brands became more powerful commodities in the market. I did not visit China until 2007, but I imagined its fashion to be a homogenous landscape with only the bravest and the richest starting to experiment with dressing for self-expression.

Any middle-aged Chinese man who wants to appear fashionable these days would have heard of two labels - Pierre Cardin and Septwolves. During the 1980s and 1990s, these two labels injected some color into Chinese menswear that was dominated by gray, blue and black.
