GUANGZHOU - A procuratorate in South China's Guangzhou city has ratified the arrests of two men who allegedly committed vandalism during anti-Japan protests in the city last month.

The two, surnamed Zha and Yang, were accused of destroying property in a Japanese restaurant at The Garden Hotel in Guangzhou on September 16, when protests in the city flared up following Japan's "purchase" of part of the Diaoyu Islands, according to a statement issued by the Yuexiu District People's Procuratorate on Wednesday.

The statement said the duo were arrested on charges of destroying public and private property and seriously disturbing public order.

Their vandalism led to a direct economic loss of over 70,000 yuan ($11,000) to the restaurant, according to the procuratorate.

Five others were arrested in Guangzhou earlier this month for their involvement in violence during the protests.
