The capital of Zhejiang province has become the first city in China to create designated hospital areas for criminal suspects who need medical treatment.
The green channels in Hangzhou will allow police officers to escort injured or sick detainees to treatment and waiting areas away from other patients.
At Hangzhou First People’s Hospital, the pinyin acronym for the new green channel is displayed in the emergency entrance to guide police and keep potentially dangerous offenders away from the public.
The waiting rooms have been fitted with seats, which can be converted into a bed to allow for examinations and treatment.
A camera has been installed in one corner and records the whole treatment in case the suspect tries to escape or injure themselves.
Hangzhou Public Security Bureau has also published a handbook to give instructions to police officers on how to handle problems.
Officials believe the green channels not only shorten the time officers have to spend at hospitals with suspects, but also ensures the safety of others at the hospital.
