4 killed in E China drunk driving accident

NANJING - Four people were killed after a drunk driver lost control of his car and it slammed into a pedestrian early Sunday morning in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu province, according to local authorities.

Running a red light at a crossroad in downtown Nanjing around 3 am, the car crashed into a light truck and tumbled several times. The two passengers were thrown out of the car and killed on the spot, and the driver was also found dead in the front seat, according to local traffic police.

A pedestrian, who had just stepped out of a taxi, was hit by the runaway car and killed in the accident.

An initial investigation showed that the driver of the car, surnamed Jiao, had become drunk after drinking with friends in two night bars successively on Saturday night, and a test indicated his blood-alcohol level was 188.4 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, well above the legal limit of 80 mg.

Police are further investigating the accident.
