Police have received reports from victims, all long-haired women, in different districts of Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province.
One victim, surnamed Li, found glue in her hair when she was waiting for a bus on July 20. Unable to remove the substance, Li had to cut her hair, which she had grown for more than three years.
She told police she saw a thin, bespectacled man with short hair run past her. About 1.7 meters tall, the man wore a white T-shirt and black pants.
Police in Wuhou district posted a wanted notice on its micro blog on July 21, calling for residents to provide evidence and help find him.
More patrol officers have been assigned to keep a watch on bus stations in areas with several such reported incidents.
