Customs figures show export and import between East China's Jiangsu province and the Europe Union is shrinking, due to weakening demand from the EU for laptops and solar cells made in Jiangsu, Nanjing Daily reported on Tuesday.

The volume of export and import in Jiangsu in the first six months surpassed $260 billion, an increase of 1.4 percent year-on-year, but the growth rate is below the national average.

Customs figures show the export volume of laptops produced in Jiangsu has decreased by 15.2 percent and solar cells by 37.3 percent. Both items were formerly the two major export products in Jiangsu.

Processing business has also plummeted. A sample survey showed one third of enterprises lost orders in the first six months of this year.

Experts say the financial crisis in EU severely hit Jiangsu province. But as the national and provincial stimulus measures take effect, international trade will increase over the next few months.
