Beijing holds forum on development in East Asia

An international conference on the development model for East Asia was held in Beijing from June 25-26, 2012.

The conference was organized by the Academic Division of International Studies, which is a group of institutes for international studies in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The conference was sponsored by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).

Sun Xuegong, deputy director of the Institute of Economics, National Development and Reform Commission, said that China should search for a new approach to development. He emphasized on industrial innovation, domestic consumption, and migrant-worker-centered urbanization.

S. K. Mohanty, senior fellow of Research and Information System for Developing Countries, said that India was simultaneously approaching policies of export-led growth and domestic demand-led growth for sustainable development.

Changjae Lee, senior fellow of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, said that the three Northeast Asian countries should fast track a China-Japan-South Korea Free Trade Agreement.

More than 30 scholars attended the conference which covers a broad range of topics, including the changing global economic environment, restructuring the regional production network of East Asia and also looked at case studies of the development model in East Asian countries.
