BEIJING - Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has held separate talks by phone with his US and Republic of Korea (ROK) counterparts Hillary Clinton and Kim Sung-hwan on tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaking to Clinton Friday and Kim Saturday, Yang said the Chinese side noted the concern of various parties about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) satellite launch Friday.

The Chinese government believed all parties needed to bear the overall situation in mind and seek to safeguard peace and stability on the peninsula, make a realistic assessment and demonstrate calmness and restraint in a bid to ease tensions on the peninsula, he said.

China had adopted a clear and consistent position on Korean Peninsula issues and would continue to maintain contact and coordination with all parties concerned, including the United States and South Korea, properly cope with the current tense situation, adhere to the September 19 joint statement and promote the resumption of the six-party talks in a concerted effort to safeguard the peninsular and regional peace and stability, Yang said.

Clinton and Kim said they attached importance to China's position and role on issues concerning the peninsula and stood ready to coordinate with China in this regard.
