Beggars convert coins for school

Two married beggars converted more than 3,000 coins they received from pedestrians into 304 yuan ($50) notes at a Postal Savings Bank, taking bank staff three hours to count. The funds were then mailed to their daughters at school, hsdcw.com reported on Thursday.

Gao Guanglin, a 49-year-old blind man, and Wang Fang, a 54-year-old crippled woman, begged 500 km from their hometown in Woyang county, Central China’s Anhui province, to Huangshi city in Central China's Hubei province, starting in mid-September. Each time they accepted money, they gave the donor a handmade bamboo pouch as a gift.

They said drought killed their rice paddy and wheat this July, depriving them of income meant to fund their two daughters at school.

The coins covered an area of 10 square meters when laid out.
