China dismisses US call to release lawyer

China asked the United States to stop interfering in its domestic affairs on Thursday, dismissing a US call to release a lawyer suspected of illegally gaining citizens' personal information in 2014.

US State Department Spokesperson Jeff Rathke issued a statement Wednesday calling on China to release and remove all restrictions on lawyer Pu Zhiqiang, who was arrested by Beijing police in June 2014 on suspicions of creating disturbance and illegally obtaining personal information.

"I wonder if you have the similar feelings like me that some people in the United States always want to act as world police or judge and meddle in others' business," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

"We advise the United States to concentrate on its own affairs, " she said.

China is advancing the rule of law and Chinese judicial organs handle cases in accordance with the law, said Hua.

The spokeswoman urged the United States to abandon double standards, be prudent with its words and deeds, and stop interfering in China's judicial sovereignty and domestic affairs.
