The mid-sized SUV, assembled at Jaguar Land Rover's joint venture with China's Chery Automobile, was launched last week in Shanghai.

As the first China-made model from Land Rover, the Rang Rover Evoque has four derivatives retailing between 448,000 and 582,800 yuan ($71,723 - $93,304). The joint venture, Chery Jaguar Land Rover, has 175 dealerships for the Evoque.

The SUV is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine and a 9-speed automatic gearbox. It produces maximum power of 177 Kw/5,500 rpm and offers top torque of 340 Nm/1,750 rpm.

The Evoque has a top speed of 217 km/h and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

The model is 4,355 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,635 mm high with a 2,660 mm-long wheelbase.

The Evoque has an excellent 4WD performance and all-terrain capability. The SUV has a striking exterior and interior design. The company said the Evoque targets "increasingly fashionable, modern and confident Chinese consumers who pursue dynamic lifestyles".

Chris Bryant, president of the joint venture, said the China-built Range Rover Evoque, with its genuine Range Rover DNA and guarantee of world-class quality, fully demonstrates the strength and confidence of Chery Jaguar Land Rover to lead the premium car market in China.

Zhu Guohua, vice-president of the joint venture, believes the locally made Evoque will set a new benchmark for the country's premium car market.
