OSAKA - A 25-year-old female Chinese student was wounded on the face after she was sprayed and cut by an unknown female suspect on a local road early Tuesday in the western Japanese prefecture of Osaka, an official of the Chinese Consulate-General in Osaka confirmed.

The incident occurred at around 0:50 am local time in Higashiosaka City of the prefecture when the student was walking back to her home after working at a bar.

Local press reports said the suspect first grasped the student's body from her back and inflicted several cuts to her face, including nose and eyelid, with a box cutter after spraying paint in the face. The suspect escaped after the assault on a bicycle.

The reports cited local police as saying that the Chinese student, currently studying in a private university, lives near the place where she was attacked.

The police are seeking information on the attack from local residents while continuing investigation.

An official of the Chinese Consulate-General in Osaka told Xinhua that after being informed about the incident, two consuls were sent to Higashiosaka City to urge the local police to conduct thorough investigations into the incident and take measures to ensure safety of Chinese nationals.
