Museum's bad attitude caught clearly in wax

Celebrities across China are outraged at their unauthorized wax figures being included in a museum in Sichuan Province that has been dubbed by netizens as "the ugliest wax museum" [Photo/IC]

A local museum in Huayingshan, Sichuan Province in Southwest China, contains wax figures that are hardly recognizable as the celebrities they are supposed to correspond to. This has outraged the celebrities concerned. Netizens are now calling it "the ugly wax museum". Comments:

Even though the museum claims to exhibit the wax figures of celebrities to attract young visitors on "red tours", it is improper and illegal if it is unauthorized. Moreover, it is also unscrupulous for the museum authority to admit the making of the wax figures was "a little casual" on the one hand, yet, on the other, attempt to rake in ticket money from visitors despite such substandard products. These celebrity wax figures seem rather nondescript together with the usual revolutionary martyrs on display, and the arrangement should shame the museum authority.

Beijing News, Aug 19

There is nothing inappropriate in displaying the wax figures of celebrities at scenic spots to attract more visitors, but the prerequisite is that they are well made. Otherwise, such attractions can offer no artistic enjoyment, and are likely to be repulsive to the public. In addition, apart from degrading the image of the celebrities involved, the museum's justification that the celebrities "may resemble their wax figures after removing their makeup," cannot erase the public's impression that the wax figures are shoddily sculptured.

It is irresponsible and deceitful for the museum to display these poorly made and dressed wax figures to attract more visitors, especially since it is fully aware the wax figures would appear so since they are seven or eight years old. Such a custom of seeking quick success and instant benefits prevails at many tourist attractions in the country.
