What makes a good photo? It's when the photographer follows his instinct and captures a fleeting moment when the photographed person is at the emotional climax or when the tension is at its peak. Marc Riboud is one of these sharp-eyed hunters.
The French photographer has selected 137 favorites from among 350,000 works and will show them in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, until June 15.
Riboud's powerful pictures challenge viewers to observe and to think. His best known images include The Painter of the Eiffel Tower, in which the painter poses like a dancer on the tower, with Paris emerging out of the photographic haze below him.
The picture Riboud shot in Washington DC in 1967 is among the most celebrated anti-war pictures. It shows a young girl, with a flower in her hands, in front of several rifle-wielding soldiers who are blocking protesters against US involvement in Vietnam.
Riboud is also known for his extensive reports on the East, especially China. He has visited China 22 times since 1957. His pictures of China serve as a documentary of the country's changes over the past 50 years.
