On a high note

Canadian indie-rock band Immaculate Machine will conclude its China tour, which began early this month, at Beijing's Yugong Yishan tonight.

The band, which was formed in 2000 and named itself after the lyrics in Paul Simon's One-Trick Pony, comprises Brooke Gallupe and Jordan Minkoff on the guitar, Kathryn Calder on the keyboard, Aden Collinge on the drums and Caitilin Gallupe playing the bass.

Gallupe started the band with two high school friends, Calder and Luke Kozlowski. They released their music independently and booked long tours through barren stretches of Canada.

After signing up with Vancouver's veteran indie label Mint Records, Immaculate Machine released its label debut, Ones and Zeros, in September 2005 and set off immediately on a tour of the US and Europe with Destroyer and The New Pornographers.

Their 2007 album Fables was well received by fans during tours of Canada, the United States and Europe. The lead single Jarhand was downloaded nearly 300,000 times when it was chosen as the iTunes download of the week.

This year, the band saw lineup changes with drummer Kozlowski being replaced by Aden Collinge. Caitlin Gallupe, Brooke's sister, joined the band on bass guitar.

Their 2009 album High on Jackson Hill was recorded in frontman Gallupe's childhood home by producer Colin Stewart and offers their most spontaneous music yet.
