AThai princess will demonstrate her prowess at playing the guzheng, a traditional Chinese zither, with a concert to help strengthen bilateral ties at the Oriental Art Center next Friday.
Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol will give two other concerts in Beijing and Guangdong later this month following her Shanghai performance. This marks the fourth performance of the "Thailand and China: Two Lands One Heart Concert" series, which was launched in 2001.
The princess, who is the youngest daughter of their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, will perform five pieces on the 21-stringed guzheng, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra from Shanghai Opera House.
The songs will include traditional Chinese and Thai melodies, as well as a new piece specially composed for the event. More than 80 performers will perform folk music, songs and dances from different regions of Thailand.
Also a renowned scientist and doctorate professor of chemistry at Bangkok's Mahidol University, Princess Chulabhorn fell in love with the guzheng over a decade ago. She played it until 2007, when her busy schedule prevented her from continuing.
She received a formal invitation from China's Ministry of Culture in March to give a concert here. Since accepting it she has been practicing for five hours a day to get her fingers reacquainted with the instrument.
"There's a lot of pressure involved in playing the guzheng in Chin, as it is a Chinese instrument with lots of experts there. But since people are coming to see my show, I'll do my best," she told Thai media.
She will perform in Bangkok on Jan 7 so her fellow Thais can enjoy her music without following her all the way to China.
The concert at Shanghai Oriental Art Center is by invitation only. People can contact the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai to ask about tickets.
