"Avatar" has sold 19.7 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in three weeks, more than any other film has ever sold in that span, the studio 20th Century Fox said on Tuesday.
The fantasy blockbuster's closest competitor, the 2008 Batman sequel "The Dark Knight," sold about 16 million copies in its first three weeks in stores.
"Avatar" was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 22.
The movie from director James Cameron already holds the record for the biggest film release at global box offices with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales.
About 80 percent of its box office gross came from 3-D screenings of the film. Fox plans to release a 3-D version of "Avatar" on DVD sometime next year.
