Ten people were injured and hospitalized after an escalator malfunction at the People's Square subway station, one of the busiest transport hubs in Shanghai, on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at 10:08 am in the transfer area from line 2 to line 1, when a woman attempted to take a baby stroller up the escalator and the stroller's wheels got caught in the stairs, causing the motorized conveyer belt to stick, xinmin.cn reported, citing local police sources.

The incident caused 14 passengers to fall from the escalator, and 10 were rushed to hospital with injuries. The infant was not in the stroller, so was unharmed.

A subway worker was near the escalator when the accident occurred and triggered the emergency stop function within 20 seconds. Police and subway station staff quickly rushed to the scene to dispense medical aid and assistance.

The emergency did not affect the operation of any trains. Authorities urged passengers to continue to exercise caution and comply with safety regulations while traveling.

In April, 12 people were injured in an escalator malfunction at Jing'an Temple subway station.
