About 20 people, mostly shop owners, in Lanzhou, Gansu province, covered a main street of the city with bricks to protest the demolition of their building, Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

People near the city's railway station on Thursday morning found the street covered by red bricks, which impeded foot and vehicle traffic.

A review of video monitors by the police found that the bricks had been thrown onto the street during the night by some 20 people, who were identified as the owners of shops on the first floor of a building designated for removal.

The construction company had sent the bricks a day earlier and was preparing to build a wall to cordon off the demolition site.

The bricks were cleaned up before 9 am on Thursday and normal traffic resumed. But the demolition project was temporarily halted for mediation.
