More than 1,200 metrological standards made by China's National Institute of Metrology have been recognized and adopted internationally, the institute announced on Thursday.

China is now ranked fifth in the world in terms of how many of its standards of metrology, the science that deals with measurement, is recognized. This marks major progress in China's capability for calibration and measurement, said Song Shuying, deputy director of the institute.

In 2007, the number of China's metrological standards recognized globally ranked eighth in the world, he said.

China's calibration and measurement capabilities recorded in the key comparison database of the Bureau International des Poids & Measures totaled 1,201 in number as of July 10, according to the bureau.
