China's major tea companies said on April 12 that their tea products met the national criteria, while responding to a recent disclosure that their tea products contained the residue of several types of pesticides, Beijing Times reported.

Greenpeace, an environmental protection organization, published a report on April 11 saying they detected at least three types of banned pesticides in the tea products from the nine major tea companies, including Zhang Yiyuan and Wu Yutai.

Zhang Yiyuan and Wu Yutai said their products met the national criteria and were safe. Some types of pesticides are banned, but a certain amount of banned pesticides are allowed. They say tea trees have been free of the banned pesticides, but that does not mean there is zero residue.
