From the heart
The Red Cross Society of China this month introduced the Continuation of Our Love program to raise money to help poverty-stricken heart disease patients.
The first phase of the program will help 1,000 patients from 592 counties.
Half of them will receive free treatment worth at least 50,000 for each patient. The rest will receive subsidies ranging from 10,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan.
Model CSR practices
China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission urged State-owned enterprises to gain a better understanding of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and become examples of CSR best practices.
The commission at a recent conference asked the enterprises to disclose information in an open manner, enhance communications with their stakeholders and strengthen their responsibilities as models for other businesses.
Ideas that soar
More than 100 Chinese university students recently attended the Airbus Fly Your Ideas Challenge review and award ceremony in Beijing.
Two teams were awarded Green Ideas and Employee Choice honors at the ceremony.
The biennial competition challenges university students worldwide to submit innovative ideas for an environmentally friendly aviation industry.
More than 2,300 students from 82 countries and regions registered for the competition.
Among them were about 300 Chinese students, who outnumbered those of other countries. The next event will be held in September 2010.
Joy of books
The Huang Yicong Charity Fund and APP Group jointly donated 16,090 books, valued at 280,000 yuan, to five middle schools in Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
The recent donation was part of the APP Joy of Reading program.
During the first phase of the charity program, 133,213 books, valued at 2.38 million yuan have been donated to schools in poverty-stricken areas, directly benefiting more than 72,000 students.
The second phase of APP Joy of Reading will start soon, according to APP Group and the charity fund.
Flu prevention
Volunteers from LG Electronics China visited a migrant worker's school in Chaoyang District, Beijing, this month to show children how to prevent the spread of H1N1.
Volunteers used games to teach children the value of hygienic habits such as washing their hands to ward off the flu.
LG has established a long-term partnership with the school to host various educational activities for the children.
Safe medicines
At the recent Medicine Quality in China Annual Conference in Wuxi, Zhejiang province, conference leaders called on all pharmaceutical companies in China to shoulder their social responsibilities by ensuring that all products are safe.
At the conference, drug firms and experts selected 12 pharmaceutical safety spokespersons, including leading professionals and members of the mainstream media, to help promote drug safety awareness to the public.
