Danish firm honored
Maersk China was honored by the Sichuan provincial government for its contributions to the recovery of the earthquake-hit area.
The Denmark-based logistics giant helped establish a middle school immediately after the earthquake in Mianyang, Sichuan, allowing more than 1,000 students to quickly return to school. The company also donated more than 4 million yuan to disaster relief initiatives.
Typhoon aid
Air China, one of China's major air carriers, donated NT$10 million through the Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits to help people affected by Typhoon Morakot.
In addition to the donation, Air China also is providing personnel and material delivery support for typhoon victims.
Red Cross donations
The Xiamen Red Cross received 16.5 million yuan in donations, and recently sent the first 15 million yuan to the Taiwan Red Cross to help typhoon survivors.
Taiwan associations in Fujian also organized fundraising events, collecting donations totaling NT$1,500 from Zhangzhou, 500,000 yuan from Quanzhou and 500,000 yuan from Fuzhou.
Forbes ranking
Eva Cheng, chairwoman of the Board of Amway (China) Co Ltd, was ranked on the 2009 the World's 100 Most Powerful Women List of Forbes for outstanding business leadership and philanthropic contributions.
Cheng led Amway China to actively take part in charity works and initiated creative corporate social causes on environmental protection, education support and women's self-development projects.
Saving energy
US computer maker Hewlett-Packard said Chinese customers are becoming active volunteers in a campaign to shut down idle computers to save energy.
The company reported that more than 19,500 people in China, Brazil, the US and India have downloaded a Power-To-Change computer software widget that tracks efforts to cut power usage.
