CDH details good deeds
China Huadian Corp (CDH), China's fourth-largest power producer, recently released its 2008 corporate social responsibility report, which highlighted its philanthropic efforts last year.
The company set up a charity fund in 2008, raising 15.8 million yuan to take part in various social causes. CDH's subsidiary branch in Wujiang, Guizhou province, donated 300,000 yuan to help build roads in Tongren county, a move to help ease the local transportation difficulty.
Acid reflux education
Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca recently announced that it would sponsor a nationwide healthcare program, "2009 Health China - Anti-gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Promotion", in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The program will set up a department on this common disease in 34 hospitals around China, provide training for doctors and dispense public education about the disease. In addition to financial support, the company will also offer expertise for the program.
CEO honored
Nam K. Woo, Greater China president and CEO of LG Electronics, was granted the title of honored citizen of Huizhou, a city in Guangdong province, for his success leading LG to shoulder corporate responsibility and contribute to local economic and social development. LG Electronics's Huizhou manufacturing facility was set up with $3.5 million in 1993 and currently employs over 4,500 people. It also has been actively helping disadvantaged people and improving living conditions in local communities.
Student program
Goldman Sachs recently selected 35 second-year students from leading Chinese universities to participate in a program that will cultivate their leadership potential.
Each student can receive a $3,000 grant for educational expenses, as well as continued support for their academic and professional advancement through an international alumni network. Since 2001, 1,050 students from more than 20 countries have joined the global leadership program initiated by the Goldman Sachs Foundation. The foundation is a global philanthropic organization founded in 1999 with a $200 million donation from the Goldman Sachs Group.
