General Electric Co said Wednesday it has been awarded a $300 million contract for work on a new east-west natural gas pipeline that is expected to boost use of the fuel in the fast-developing eastern section of the nation. GE's oil and gas division will provide compression equipment and turbines for the PetroChina pipeline that will run 8,700 kilometers through 13 of China's provinces.

Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q, Britain's biggest do-it-yourself chain, is shutting one in three of its stores in China as it seeks to achieve a turnaround. The company, which earlier in the decade was the biggest British corporate investor in China, is closing 22 of its 63 stores; another 17 will be downsized.

Some leading indicators are pointing to a recovery of economic growth as the macroeconomic measures have produced preliminary results, said Zhou Xiaochuan in an article posted on the People's Bank of China website.

The State Council last week urged local governments to stick to the three-day May Day holiday plan, destroying hopes of a return to the golden week to spur the economy.

A sweeping overhaul of the financial system was unveiled last week by US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, in an effort to prevent a repeat of the banking crisis that toppled once-mighty institutions and wiped out trillions of dollars in investor wealth. Geithner told lawmakers that the changes are needed to fix the flaws exposed by the current financial crisis, the worst to hit America in seven decades.
