The backbone of the collection stems from the merger of UBS and PaineWebber in 2000. The former CEO of PaineWebber Donald B. Marron, himself is an important private contemporary art collector, assembled one of the most significant collections in the United States over a period of 30 years.
This core collection was further enhanced and complemented by selected pieces, mostly photography, from the existing Swiss and European UBS collections and with the introduction of a single UBS brand worldwide in 2003. The opportunity, with the help of independent experts, to create one of the world's most outstanding and comprehensive collections of contemporary art has since grown.
Since 2004, the collection currently comprises more than 1,000 paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures and video works.
The UBS Art Collection was publicly in December 2004 with the first subsequent major showing of works taking place at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York in early 2005.
