Q: Back into 2003, there were many problems for China's software industry, such as piracy and the shortage of talent. Was that a concern for you?

Leonard Liu answers

A: I knew this would change. When I was in IBM in the 1970s, there was no one willing to pay for software, let alone services. You bought hardware and software was free. But it changed over the years when people realized the value of software. I was sure this would happen in China as well.

Q: Why did you decide to set up your own business in your 60s?

A: The reason is very simple. I enjoy setting up an aim in my life and open my eyes everyday to work toward it.

Q: Don't you think it's easier to create a world-class software company in the US rather than China?

A: No. The US market is already saturated. For a startup, challenging with the existing magnates is really difficult. But in China, opportunity is basically equal, as long as you are strong enough.

Q: What kind of employees do you like most?

A: I like people who are passionate, patient and who are good team players.

Q: What's your hobby?

A: Table tennis, tennis and swimming.

Q: What's your favorite book?

A: I enjoy reading Chinese classics such as The Art of War by Sun Tzu. The strategies discussed in the book are also useful for running a business.
