HK$400 million for HKU

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will strengthen its legal education and research with the donation of HK$400 million by New World Development Company Limited Chairman Cheng Yu-tung.

Some of the money will be used for establishing an institute of comparative Chinese law, a center for arbitration and dispute resolution, and a legal education clinic providing limited legal services to those in need.

Sino-Franch doctor training

Beijing Health Bureau, the French Embassy in China, and energy giant Total have launched a Sino-French joint training program for emergency doctors at Beijing Anzhen Hospital.

The program is designed to upgrade Beijing's emergency medical professionals and staff in order to provide state-of-the-art emergency medical service for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

This program is part of a letter of intent signed in mid-November 2007 for the purpose of further strengthening Sino-French cooperation on emergency medicine.

Aiding autistic children

Heng An Standard Life Insurance has designed a policy tailored for autistic children and donated portions of the policy to Star Rain Education Institute, a non-profitable association dedicated to curing autistic children.

The staff of Heng An Standard Life has designated each Friday as the day for individual donations to aid autistic children.

Flowserve chips in

Flowserve Corp, a world's leader in the fluid motion and control industry, has announced the donation of a computer laboratory to Loufeng School and a science laboratory for Number Eight Middle School in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, where the company's manufacturing facility is located.

Flowserve also launched its partnership with Junior Achievement (JA), a private international educational organization that grooms high school students for business careers. Flowserve's staff will work as JA volunteers and teachers in Jiangsu.

Rights for migrant workers

The Jiangsu provincial government recently issued the Jiangsu Migrant Workers' Right Protection Rule which provides more effective measures to protect migrant workers' rights through employment services, salary, insurance, supervision, and legal responsibilities.

Regarding their salary, the rule says that employers should pay the salary to the migrant workers directly and issue them a salary slip at the same time. Employers must not collect or charge deposits or other unreasonable fees from migrant workers when hiring them.
